Bob's Flower and Hive Report

December 2012 Meeting

Hive Report

The weather has been too cold lately for the bees to do much flying.  Bees will typically not fly when temperatures fall below 55 degrees Fahrenheit.  Although, bees will have some limited flying time down to 50 degrees.

The bees only maintain hive temperature in the cluster; not the entire hive.  If you need to remove frames, be sure to only take a quick look and return frames to the same position.

Keep a close watch on hive weight.  Food supplies may be getting low or critically low.  If needed, feed fondant.

Flower Report

There are few plants in bloom right now. Among the few that are, you may find Dandelion, Henbit, Mahonia (winter holly), Aster, and Camellia.

  • Dandelion
    Taraxacum officinale

  • Henbit
    Lamium amplexicaule
Closes up in the evening, so bees work it early in the day.  Incandescent deep purple pollen.
