Bob's Flower and Hive Report

November  2012 Meeting

Hive Report

It’s time to think about feeding bees, if the colony is light.  Feeding fondant over the winter months is recommended.

Limit hive inspections to when the temperature is above 55 degrees. Return frames to the same location from which they are removed.  Be sure to have your queen excluders removed.  If left on over winter, the bees may move up through the excluder, leaving the queen behind and chilling her. Without a healthy queen, your colony will eventually die out.

Nosema Ceranae is slowly showing up again. Treat with Fumagilin-B by the drizzle method, when temperatures are above 60 degrees.

Flower Report

Golden rod, aster, dandelion, false dandelion, knock out roses and camellia sasanqua.  Due to the lack of rain, flowers are beginning to dry up.

  • Golden Rod
    Solidago spp.

  • Dandelion
    Taraxacum officinale
Not bees’ favorite, but always available.
