Bob's Flower and Hive Report

March 2013 Meeting

Hive Report

Swarm season is approaching.  If you intend to catch a swarm, get your swarm catching equipment ready.

Remember to add honey supers as early as 3 weeks before honey flow starts.  If the hive has enough stored food, remove the feeder.  Then wait a few days before installing honey supers.  Reversing hive bodies can also be done at this time.

Flower Report

Henbit, dandelion, winter honeysuckle, greens, and fruit trees.

Bees will not work yellow bells or Bradford pear.  As the weather warms, more bee plants will begin to bloom.

  • Dandelion
    Taraxacum officinale
    Just beginning to bloom.

  • Henbit
    Lamium amplexicaule
Closes up in the evening, so bees work it early in the day.  Incandescent deep purple pollen.
